Work

“In imitation of Christ who wanted to work with his own hands in Nazareth, and in obedience to the prescriptions of the Rule, the nuns will submit themselves gladly to the common law of work… They will place at the service of the sisters their energies and talents and keep in mind that labour is also a way to associate themselves
with the redemptive work of Christ."

Constitutions 37

"Whatever your work is, put your heart into it as if it were for the Lord and not for men,
knowing that the Lord will repay you by making you his heirs. It is Christ that you are serving."

Col. 3:3-24

A healthy balance

Work is an essential part of the monastic routine. Through our work we contribute to the upkeep of the monastery. Most of the work is manual and includes cooking, gardening, cleaning, laundry, sewing, etc., while some is artistic and creative such as cards and crafts. There is also the task of organising the monastery and the very important work of caring for the sick and elderly. All this work provides a healthy balance to the intense prayer life of an enclosed community. The daily rhythm of prayer, work, solitude and community creates a sense of order and calm which fosters the growth of the spiritual life.

True humility

"Reflect that true humility consists in being willing and ready to do what our Lord asks of us.  Then if contemplation, mental and vocal prayer, nursing the sick, the work of the house and the most menial labour all serve this Guest, why should we choose to minister to him in one way rather than in another."

 St Teresa of Avila
